Yarn

Handspun yarns using breed-specific wools and other natural fibers for the discriminating crafter.

I learned to spin in the 1970’s. At that time, the only fiber available was raw fleece. It was always filthy, full of vegetation, and of unknown breed. I was in love with spinning though, so I had to learn to make something usable from what I had.  It was the perfect education.
One day, my wheel had an unfortunate accident. This was before the internet and the wheel had come from New Zealand. I had no idea how to get replacement parts, so it was a long time before I decided to start spinning again.  A whole new world opened to me, with so many different wheels, accessories, and fibers now available online.  I bought a new  Ashford wheel and started spinning as many different breeds of wool as I could get my hands on.
I was in love all over again. I’m also a knitter, and knitting with hand spun yarn is wonderful. I had always wanted to do lace knitting, but was self-taught and had been unsuccessful on my prior attempts. Now, with videos available online, I was able to finally learn the correct way to knit some of the beautiful stitches I’d admired for so long.
I have been selling my handspun yarns for a while at various shows and to a few private knitters. It has felt so nice to share something I love with other knitters, that I’ve decided to start making my yarn available on Etsy.  It’s my goal to bring yarn, especially lace weight to knitters at a price that is as reasonable as possible, so more people have a chance to experience the unique ‘personality’ of hand spun fibers.

This yarn was spun on my Ashford Traveler wheel in a smoke free, pet friendly environment. It is a hand-made item, and sometimes breaks occur in the yarn when plying. Knots are tied to keep the ends together. Every effort is made to keep these to no more than 2 per skein.

WASHING: For washing this yarn please use room temperature water. Please do NOT agitate which can and will felt wool. You may use a wool wash if you wish. If water is warm at all please let cool to room temp before removing yarn.

PHOTOGRAPHS: All photographs have been done without flash, in as natural lighting as possible. I have made adjustments through photo edit to have the best color accuracy. PLEASE NOTE – that I have NO control over the differences from color monitor to color monitor.

 Yarn Weights:

There are many different charts with yarn weights in relation to “wraps per inch”, “yards per pound”, and gauge. For consistency, this is the chart that I am using to give you yarn size information:

The yarn weights are determined by wraps per inch as follows:
cobweb 30+
lace 24-30
fine fingering 20-24
fingering 16-20
fine sport 14-16

DK 12-14

I sell by the number of yards (and I always round down to the last increment when counting.)

My handspun yarns have had the twist set by wetting, and air dried with no weight to minimize bias memory.
